I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvelous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well. ~Psalm 139:14
My Naturale Hair Journey
After relaxing my tightly coiled/kinky regular African-American hair for 10 years, I decided to grow the relaxer out and wear my hair in its au naturale state. My last relaxer was on September 17, 2004. I cut all of my relaxed hair off in October of 2005, and I am loving it!
The purpose of this blog is to share what I've learned from books, the Internet (shout out to Nappturality.com), and my experience in transitioning to au naturale hair. I'm by no means an expert or a professional, so please take my advice for what it is--another opinion. Feel free to comment and add any additional information you may have. I hope you find this blog helpful. God bless!
There are lots of hair tutorials that explain how to do different hairstyles. Here is one that shows how to do flat twists. I used to do this style all the time when I was transitioning. It is great because it blends the two textures and sets the hair for at least a week. I usually ended up with 10 rows and it took about an hour to do. I would do the twists at night, put on a scarf, and let them air dry overnight. In the morning, I would sit under the dryer for about 15 minutes, just to make sure that it was completely dry. If your hair is not completely dry when you take it down, you will end up with frizzy hair. At the time, I was using John Freida products. At night, I would wear a scarf or a hair bonnet.
I haven't done my own flat twists since I've been completely natural because it makes for bigger hair, and I like smaller, more defined hair on me. I may try it again sometime soon though.
I don't know anything about the products advertised in the video, but the technique is good. I just wish they would have shown how it looks when taken down. Check it out:
I've actually seen this video before, and I also wish they had shown the end result. I also wish there was a video done on someone with a texutre closer to my own. I will definitely try out this style.
I wish I knew how to cornrow my own hair. :( I'm going to try to do the flat twists next time I do my hair.
I have become obsessed with watching natural hair Youtube videos!! I like to see what other people's textures look like and I like to imagine what mine will look like.
Since you both are transitioning, think this would be a great style for you to try. One other thing I forgot to mention--after you take the twists down, massage your scalp at the parts to make the parts disappear. This style also looks great with a headband.
If I try flat twists on myself again, I'll take pictures so you can see what it looks like on my texture.
I know! I asked Mark if he would be willing to trim my ends if I taught him how. He looked very uncomfortable and changed the subject. He's washed my hair before, but I guess styling is taking it too far.

Thanks for posting the video!

I told Victor he needs to learn how to do hair so that he can do mine! Something tells me that I will be doing it myself though. LOL!
